Betty Rose Newby, 77, a Rock Island resident and White County native died Oct. 4 in St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital following an extended illness.She was a retired sales clerk with Walmart, a member of Blue Spring Cove Church of Christ, and daughter of the late William Rastus and Rosa Lee Clouse Massa. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Bertha Tarkington, Willie Mae Nash and Myrtle Ezell; and brother Harley Massa.Mrs. Newby was married May 8, 1954 to Robert Morris Newby, who survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by children and spouses, Gary and Denise Newby, Angel and Tommy Powell and Manie and Rena Newby, all of Rock Island, David and Denise Newby of Rome, Ga., and Willie and Donna Newby of McMinnville; 13 grandchildren, Jason Newby and wife Shelley of Knoxville, Mechele Hardy and husband Jonathan of Dayton, Jeremy Newby of Murfreesboro, Brandon, Justin and Tara Newby of Rome, Ga., Sherry Waldron and husband Greg of Morrison, Carly Newby of Rock Island, Mark Powers and wife Heather, Mandy Powell, Emily Bullington and husband Doug, and Olivia and Ashley Newby, all of McMinnville; 19 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and James Dalton of Baxter; brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Donna Massa of Smyrna; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul and Willene Newby, Doug and Becky Bost and Jackie Newby, all of McMinnville; and several nieces and nephews.Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in High’s Chapel with Gary Newby and David Newby to officiate.
