McMinnville resident and Hamblen County native Betty Overton, 80, died April 25 at River Park Hospital.A bookkeeper at Valley Feed and a member of McMinnville First Baptist Church, she served on several church committees and taught Sunday School most of her adult life at Central Baptist Church in Knoxville and McMinnville First Baptist. She was a member of Mary and Martha Sunday School Class.The daughter of the late Andrew Burl and Francis Purkey Shanks, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melbourne David “M.D.” Overton Sr.; brother, Neal Shank and sister, Phyllis Shanks.She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Jane (Debbie) and Charlie Smartt of Viola; son and daughter-in-law, Melbourne Davis and Nan Overton Jr. of Brentwood; grandchildren, Byron Smartt of McMinnville, John Smartt of Morrison, Jamie Smartt Parker of Taylor, S.C., Taylor and Jackson Overton of Brentwood; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Emerson Parker of Taylor, Eric and Phoebe Smartt of Morrison; brother, John F. Shanks of New Orleans, La.; sister, Doris Jean Shanks of Knoxville; sister-in-law, Peggy Marguerat of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews.Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at High’s Chapel with John May officiating.
