Betty Jean Oakes Dean, 83, a McMinnville resident and Bledsoe County native, was born March 10, 1936 and passed away March 3 at the Webb House in McMinnville following a short illness.

She was the owner of BJ’s Custom Quilting, a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, and the daughter of the late Hunter and Bessie Ward Oakes. She was married to Clarence Lee Dean, who preceded her in death in 2014. She is also preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Bobbye Oakes Cantrell, Jewell Oakes Reese, Harold, Raymond, Woodrow, D.C., Leonard, R.A., Turner, and Paul Oakes.

Mrs. Dean is survived by daughter and son-in-law Donna and Joe Shelton Jr. of McMinnville, two grandchildren T.J. and Emma Shelton of McMinnville, brother and sister-in-law Jim and Dorthy Oakes of Crossville, brother and sister-in-law Monroe and Racheal Oakes of McMinnville and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside service and interment will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in High’s Parlor.
