My Father’s Closet, in association with The Upper Cumberland Foster Closet, is making big impacts assisting the foster and kinship children of McMinnville and the communities of Warren County.

Formed in 2020, all efforts are realized without paid staff and only approximately six volunteers.

In 2021-22, My Father’s Closet served 363 youth ranging in age from birth to 17 years. During that time, 2,047 articles of clothing were provided along with baby formula, diapers, car seats, and many other essentials for daily living.

The inaugural Shop with a Cop Program kicked off in December of 2021 where 47 children received the benefit of those efforts.

Director Detra Whiles, who founded the organization, touts the efforts of volunteers who make the program work.

“I could not do what I do without these volunteers because I work a full-time job,” said Whiles. ”I was praying for over a year for volunteers. Almost a year to the day, they showed up.”

Currently, the local organization is an extension of the larger Upper Cumberland association, but according to Whiles their next step is working toward a 501(c)3 for stand-alone, nonprofit status.

“We are gearing up for our next fundraiser which will be a golf tournament at McMinnville Country Club,” said Whiles.

The event will be held Friday, July 22 with registration at 11 a.m. and tee off time at 1 p.m. Hole sponsorship is $100 and champion sponsorship is $500. Teams can form and enter the tournament up until the time of registration. For more information on the tournament, you can contact Whiles.
