It’s time to think about pencils and books.

To help students have much-needed school supplies, Irving College Baptist Church is having a backpack giveaway next weekend. It will be held on Saturday, July 24, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church located at 8931 Beersheba Highway.

“This year we’re going to have the backpacks already packed with school supplies,” said church pastor Ryan Crips. “Last year we prepared for 150 and we gave away 204. We had to take names and phone numbers and get them the backpacks later. This year we have already packed 300.”

The backpack giveaway is available to all Warren County students in grades pre-K to 12 on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“We are so excited to be able to give back to the community,” said Crips, who indicated church members are pleased to set aside money for this worthwhile project that benefits children.

The first day of school for the Warren County School System is Wednesday, Aug. 11. In-person classroom learning will take place five days a week this year.
