Get moving with Tai Chi for Arthritis

Looking for a way to move more to reduce the pain and stiffness of arthritis, or just want to try another form of exercise? Tai Chi for Arthritis may be your answer. This joint-safe program is designed to help manage the effects of arthritis through slow agile steps and exercises. Hilda Lytle, a certified Tai Chi for Arthritis instructor and UT-TSU Extension Family and Consumer Science agent, will lead the series of 10 classes. The focus of the program will be to learn the basic forms of the sun style of Tai Chi to reduce pain and stiffness while improving balance and memory.
Created by Dr. Paul Lam with the help of a team of medical experts, Tai Chi increases heart and lung activity, aligns posture, improves balance, and integrates the mind and body.  Other benefits may include: improved ability to cope with stress and depression, memory, coordination, muscle strength and stamina and body awareness. Studies have shown that people with arthritis who have completed the class have experienced less pain and stiffness, tend to exercise and relax more, and have more overall knowledge of their condition. 
The Warren County class will be conducted at the administrative offices on Locust Street. It is open to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, religion or veteran status.  This Tai Chi Level I class is designed for people with arthritis but is beneficial to anyone
Classes will be held at 4:30 p.m. on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. The tentative dates are Aug. 23, 25; Sept. 1, 6, 13, 20, 22, 27, 29; and Oct. 4. Registration is requested by 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 19.  Please call or come by the Extension office at 473-8484 for registration and class fee information. Class size is limited to a 15 person maximum.
