Former World Series pitcher for the Detroit Tigers Jamie “Cat” Walker was the honored guest and speaker at Boyd Christian School’s Spring Fundraiser Banquet held at Bridgestone Learning Center. He delivered a message of his life career through the idea of working hard. In his presentation to the 250 guests attending, he mentioned four major bullet points for success – work ethic, dedication, determination and sacrifice.
A Warren County High School baseball standout, Walker’s Major League Baseball career includes playing for the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Royals, the Tigers, and the Baltimore Orioles.
A crafty left-handed pitcher, Walker was often dominant while playing for the Pioneers. He graduated in 1989 and went on to pitch at Austin Peay State University.
“The event was a huge success, and we are so impressed with Walker’s humility and selflessness both in his speech and his demeanor with the students,” said Boyd principal Tabetha Sullens. “We are sincerely grateful for his willingness to be the center of our banquet.”
Guests enjoyed traditional baseball game food at the meet and greet at 6 p.m., with the dinner and auction starting at 7 p.m. Following the auction of autographed paraphernalia, Walker took time to visit with the youth and signed cards for each of them. It was estimated the event garnered $20,000 for the school.
Ben Lomand Connect graciously donated its guest table to a group of youth from the Kids of the Community, making their night very memorable.
Boyd School head chairman Gary Hancock saluted the utility companies for their dedication and hard work during the recent ice storms.
Sullens presented English and Bible teacher Chris Perry the “Outstanding Service Award” for 2015 for his dedication to technology services on campus.
“Chris is a tremendous asset to the school, working countless hours installing projectors over the summer, setting up our computer lab and helping with the security system over Christmas break,” said Sullens. “He is a great mentor and role model to our students.”
Charles Newport was presented with the “2015 BCS Philanthropy Award” for his dedication to Christian education as the partner in education. Newport is principal Sullens’ father and a big supporter of the school.
“Dad has supported me in this principal role, suggested many of the improvements he has contributed to this year, and I am indebted to him as a role model and as a hard worker,” said Sullens. “He is truly a blessing to us all, especially me.”
