A woman who kidnapped and robbed an elderly Warren County man after luring him to Smithville will serve four years in prison.
The woman, Amanda Gail Maxwell Bain, 29, entered guilty pleas before DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge Gary McKenzie to charges of robbery and kidnapping. She was given a four-year sentence on each count but they are to run concurrently, meaning she will get a four-year sentence as a Range-One offender. She must serve 30 percent of her term before consideration for parole.
Authorities say it was Bain who lured the 81-year-old Warren County man to her Smithville home with a phone call, asking him to come talk to her. Bain and the victim were acquaintances.
She accosted the elderly man, hitting him from behind when he arrived. She then held a box cutter on him and made him get back in his vehicle. She directed him to go to ATMs at two banks in Smithville. She held him at knife-point while she sat in the passenger seat of his car. He was forced to withdraw $300 from the ATMs in Smithville.
After hitting the first two banks, Bain had the victim pick up her partner in crime, Charles Wayne Reagan, 31, also of Smithville. The pair forced the victim to drive back to McMinnville where they planned for him to visit more ATMs and take out more money for them.
However, the elderly victim gave them the slip when he stopped at a red light on New Smithville Highway in McMinnville. The man managed to get out of the car and escape. He was chased by his captors, but he was able to make it to a phone and call authorities.
The kidnappers fled in his car and hid in Smithville but were nabbed the next morning when they returned to Bain’s home.
Reagan will face his charges at a later date.
