Woman gets year for showing up in court with abuse victim

A woman who showed up for her day in court alongside the victim she was accused of assaulting was given a year in jail.The woman, Laura A. Martinez, 22, will spend her birthday later this week behind bars after she was given an 11-month, 29-day sentence by General Sessions Judge Larry for domestic assault.Her sentence came for assaulting her boyfriend, Joshua Vasquez. Police took the assault warrant against Martinez when they arrived to find her lying on the ground intoxicated outside the North Spring Street residence where the assault had occurred.When asked about the swelling police saw above the victim’s eye, he told them he had woke up to Martinez “hitting on him.” A witness confirmed his story prompting Martinez’s arrest.
