Two annual Veterans Day celebrations will be held Sunday to honor veterans. VFW’s event begins at 2 p.m., and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church’s begins at 5 p.m.
“This year’s event will be a combined celebration of the VFW and Gardens of Memory,” said VFW Ladies Auxiliary president Phyllis Barnes. “We worked together last year and it was a huge success.”
The event will be held at the VFW and will last about an hour. Refreshments will be served.
Barnes says VFW is also participating in Light Up Tennessee on Veterans Day.
“We are encouraging everyone to turn their porch light on to honor veterans on Veterans Day,” she said. “Light Up Tennessee honors our veterans and soldiers who are still fighting to protect us and our freedoms.”
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church will be holding its Veterans Day concert at 5 p.m. at St. Matthew’s, located at 105 Edgewood Avenue.
“We feel it’s important to honor veterans actually on Veterans Day,” said Steve Grove, choir director for St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. “You can come to our event and still have time to attend your own church services if you are so inclined.”
The event has been held for seven years and will feature the combined choirs of St. Matthew’s and Clark United Methodist Church. Music will feature a mixture of patriotic and religious hymns.
Grove says seating is always limited.
“It is usually standing room only,” he said. “A helpful hint is to arrive a bit early to ensure a seat. Our event has grown every year.”
Both events are open to the public and refreshments will be provided.
