Only one in four teachers bothered doing their homework when it came to voting on a settlement package between the school system and teacher’s association. The negotiated settlement, which will be the last negotiation between the school system and teachers given the new state law which curtails collective bargaining, brought a slight increase to insurance contributions by the school system for teachers.Specifically, the one concession approved by the School Board allows for a $250 contribution to the insurance premiums for teachers who have insurance through the school system. The settlement will also allow for a one-time payment of $150 to teachers who have their insurance through another source. The WCEA had asked originally for a $400 contribution to help offset the county’s somewhat pricey health insurance costs. While a medium was reached between the WCEA and school system, leaders of the organization were disappointed by the response from those teachers eligible to vote.
