FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee emergency management official says two people have died and six were injured when a tornado touched down in Lincoln County.

Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesman Jeremy Heidt said state officials are sending aid on Tuesday, including 20 National Guardsmen, to help local officials as they search for more possible victims and try to clear roads blocked by debris.

Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Mike Hall says the winds destroyed several homes Monday night as well as an elementary school in the county that borders Alabama.

Meanwhile, there were widespread power outages due to a damaged transmission tower. Scattered outages were also reported in a handful of other counties. Flooding was reported in Moore and Maury counties.

Heidt said no other county requested assistance from the state due to the severe weather, which is blamed for at least 28 deaths across the U.S.

The National Weather Service hasn't confirmed a tornado, but meteorologist Stephen Latimer said crews would survey damage on Tuesday to determine whether a twister hit.

Dana Davis, who has lived in the Price Lane neighborhood for three decades, told The Tennessean that she took shelter before the storm hit with her 7-year-old son and her dog and later got a text later from her best friend, who stayed.

"Yours is gone. We're homeless. Mom's is gone. Everybody's is gone. We're trapped in my granny's bathroom," it said.

Davis' family helped her look through the damage for anything salvageable.

"We're mainly looking for pictures. It's the only thing that matters now," said Davis's mother, Donna Decker.
