ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a Tennessee man has drowned along the South Carolina coast amid warnings of rip currents because of a tropical depression offshore.
Local news outlets report 64-year-old Dwight Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee, died at a hospital after he was pulled from waters on the north end of the Isle of Palms late Monday afternoon. A fire crew and bystander brought Smith back to shore.
Isle of Palms Fire Chief Ann Graham says there were strong currents but said Smith may have also had a medical issue.
Forecasters have been warning of rip currents along the South Carolina coast this week. While the depression is moving away from the North Carolina coast, a second tropical system is forecast to approach from Florida by Friday.
