KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A fire at an apartment complex in Knoxville has left a 3-year-old dead and displaced 38 people.
Local news outlets report that the blaze started Monday night. The cause remains under investigation.
Knoxville Fire Department Capt. D.J. Corcoran says that arriving firefighters found heavy flames coming from the three-story building, which contains 24 units.
Firefighters discovered a mother and a child both unconscious on the second floor. Officials say the victims were suffering from severe smoke inhalation and were taken to a hospital, where the child died.
The woman's condition remains unclear. Officials say the child's name will be released upon notification of next of kin.
The American Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter to help those displaced.
