GALLATIN, Tenn. (AP) — A small plane crashed and caught fire at the Sumner County regional airport, injuring the pilot.

Mike McCartney, the owner of fixed based operator GTO Aviation, tells The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1Th6ZRQ) that Friday afternoon a small plane bounced on the runway when it landed, "nosed over" and flipped upside down.

Sheriff Sonny Weatherford identified the pilot as 73-year-old Gregory Harms. He was flying with his two grandsons, ages 10 and 13.

According to Weatherford, Harms said that the cockpit of the Piper PA22 began to fill with smoke shortly after takeoff. He turned around and came back, but was unable to see the runway when landing.

Harms sustained a head injury. Weatherford says Harms was taken to a hospital, but refused treatment. No other injuries were reported.
