A mother has been sentenced to three months in jail for smacking her child in the face. The woman, Mary Magalline Jernigan, 40, was directed by General Sessions Judge Bill Locke to serve 90 days of an 11-month, 29-day sentence and must undergo a drug and alcohol assessment for domestic assault. Her sentence comes after deputies were called to her Smartt Station home to answer a domestic dispute. Once there, deputy Jason Walker said he determined violence had been directed at Jernigan’s 12-year-old daughter.Specifically, Walker said there had been an argument between Jernigan and her boyfriend and, at some point, her daughter tried to intervene.“Her 12-year-old daughter tried to get the two adults to stop arguing,” Walker said in the warrant against Jernigan. “Mary Jernigan then slapped her daughter on the right side of the face causing redness.”Since the incident was classified as domestic assault, Jernigan, along with her jail time, will forever lose her right to own a firearm.
