Get ready to dive in. The Warren County Chapter of the American Red Cross says sign-ups for this summer’s Learn To Swim classes will be held this Thursday, June 27 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., or until classes are full, at McMinnville Civic Center.
Classes are free of charge.
As in previous years, classes will be available for children ages 6 and up. Students must be a minimum of 6 years old when their class starts. Adult classes are 15 and up.
Classes are at Gilley Pool, Monday thru Friday, for two weeks and last one hour each night. There are two sessions. Session 1 is July 8-19 and Session 2 is July 22-Aug. 2. Classes start at 6, 7, and 8 p.m. Classes for all levels of adults are in Session 2 at 8 p.m.
Kyle Phillips is again directing the program. Call the Red Cross office at 473-2595 or 815-1963 if you have any questions.
A basic rescue class for 11-15-year-olds will be offered. Participants must have strong Level 4 or higher skills and pass a water test the first night of class. This class will be offered in Session 2 only at 7:30 p.m. and is limited to 16 people.
Due to the lack of instructors this year, we need volunteers who will be able to get in the pool, get wet and assist the instructors. Volunteers will also be needed on deck for bathroom duty. It would be extremely helpful if each class had two to four assistants, especially in the lower levels. Without the addition of volunteers, class size will be limited. No swim skills are necessary as volunteers will only be assisting the instructor. A table will be set up during registration for volunteers to sign up.
“Everyone who helps with this program is a volunteer and it is that volunteer spirit that keeps this program going,” said Phillips.
According to Phillips, no late registrations or telephone registrations will be accepted. Only applications received June 27 at the Civic Center will be accepted for registration. If you are unable to attend, please have someone attend and register for you. Applications are required to be signed by parents or legal guardians only. The application can be signed the first night of class if someone other than the parent is submitting it.
If you would like to volunteer to assist, please call 815-1963 or the Red Cross at 473-2595.
