Sex offender caught at fair

A carnival worker has been busted for being a convicted felon and working in close proximity with children after he was found drunk in the parking lot of Warren County Fair.

The carnie, Zachary Aaron George, 25, stands charged with public intoxication, carrying a weapon and failure to register with the sex offender registry and violation of sex offender restrictions. He will face hearing before General Sessions Judge Bill Locke Oct. 7.

George was arrested when Deputy Jared Jacobs came upon several people gathered around a vehicle in the parking lot during the fair in the fair parking lot. The deputy said he could smell a strong odor of alcohol. He then began checking identifications. When George couldn’t produce anything to identify himself, the deputy became suspicious and searched him.

“He had a pair of brass knuckles in his pocket,” Jacobs said.

A background check revealed George was a convicted sex offender and that he had failed to register himself in Tennessee. The sex offender law requires that offenders register their new address within 48 hours of moving. The law also places restrictions on jobs where the offender may come into contact with children. He was working at the Warren County Fair where thousands of children go each year.

George was a sex offender out of Illinois although his most recent address showed him as living in Greenville, S.C. The conviction that made him a sex offender happened when he was 17-years-old. The victim in that case was a 16-year-old girl. According to the Illinois registry he was convicted of criminal sexual assault.

He could face up to two years in prison for violation of the registration requirement.
