Warren County students will be paying a little more for breakfast beginning in August.
According to Director of Schools Bobby Cox, the school nutrition department has requested to increase breakfast prices to $1.10 for paying students in pre-K through eighth grade. The price for breakfast will be $1.25 for students at Warren County High School. All students paid $1 for breakfast last year.
Cox said, “Two years ago we raised prices a little bit. This past year we held prices down as best we could. But lunch participation went down due to some of the changes in the guidelines. It has been a struggle for us to meet guidelines such as more fresh fruits, vegetables and grains. The fried foods and things are not allowable in the new guidelines for reimbursement. Everything continues to go up. For us to continue to operate and meet federal guidelines, we will have to raise prices somewhat.”
Cox said breakfast participation for Warren County students for the 2011-12 school year was 393,438. Breakfast participation for the 2012-13 school year was 377,541, a reduction of 15,897 meals.
Lunch participation for the 2011-12 school year was 789,939. The number went down to 696,151 during the 2012-13 school year, a reduction of 93,788 meals.
The school nutrition department is also requesting to charge reduced-price-eligible students 10 cents for breakfast and 25 cents for lunch. According to Jean Wix, director of nutrition, the reduced-price meals for breakfast and lunch were free of charge for the school year 2012-13. The charge was subsidized with money from the cafeteria lunch balance.
Cox said, “We subsidized that through our fund balance so we didn’t put an extra burden on families. This year, we are not going to be able to do that.”
Wix requested to keep lunch prices the same as last year at $1.35 for grades pre-K through eighth and $1.60 for high school.
Wix said lunch prices are as low, or lower, than surrounding counties. According to Wix, lunch prices for 2012-2013 in surrounding counties were:
• White County - $1.35 in elementary and $1.60 in middle and high school (the same as Warren County)
• DeKalb County – $1.45 for elementary, and $1.70 in middle and high school
• Grundy County – $1.85 for elementary and middle school, and $2.35 for high school
• Coffee County – $2.25 for elementary, and $2.50 for middle and high school
School Board members voted to approve the 2013-14 school breakfast and lunch prices. Members present were Bill Zechman, chairman, Tanya Bess, Jeff Lee and Scott Holmes. Absent were Michael Adamson and Linda Blair.
