A man who stabbed a Good Samaritan outside Asbury Apartments has been sentenced to four years in the state penitentiary. The defendant, Jerry Rutledge, 36, entered a guilty plea before Circuit Court Judge Bart Stanley to the charge of aggravated assault. He was given four years on the Class C Felony which carries between three and six years. The sentence comes after he stabbed Christopher Owens outside the apartment complex when he stopped to see if he was having car trouble.“I saw him leaning up against the driver’s side fender of a car and rolled my window down and asked him if he needed assistance,” Owens recalled on the warrant against Rutledge. “I exited my car and told him I had a jump box in my trunk if he needed it.”Owens said what happened next was unexpected as the man charged him and began swinging a knife at him.“He stabbed me two times in my left side,” Owens said in the warrant, noting he ended up needing eight stitches for the wounds. It was later learned Rutledge was an ex-boyfriend a woman Owens had been dating, something Owens did not realize when he offered to help him.
