Roberts gets probation for fondling inmate

A former Warren County sheriff’s deputy has been given probation for inappropriate touching of a female inmate he was transporting back to McMinnville.
The incident happened in neighboring Sequatchie County as the former deputy, Alan Roberts, was driving the female inmate to Warren County Jail. Since the crime happened there, the case was also settled in Dunlap.
Roberts agreed to terms on the charge of sexual contact with an inmate and was placed on probation for one year by the Sequatchie County court. He has already been terminated from his job as a sheriff’s deputy, something that was done by mutual agreement once the allegations surfaced against him late last year. His probation has been transferred to Warren County so it can be overseen in his hometown.
His agreement was accepted under a judicial diversion meaning Roberts can have his criminal record erased once his probation is over provided he abides by the terms of his probation. He will also be required to perform 100 hours public service work.
Roberts was driving the female inmate back to Warren County Jail after the original transport unit, which was driven by a female deputy, broke down on its way from a facility in Hamilton County. Roberts was sent to pick up the inmate while the female deputy stayed with her vehicle.
Investigators say Roberts inappropriately touched the female inmate while he was driving her back to Warren County. The female inmate reported the fondling a short time later.
