Pedestrian hit Wednesday night

A Colorado man was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night as he was crossing the bypass near Applebee’s.The victim, Michael Leithiser, 47, of Lakewood, Colo., was taken to River Park Hospital by the Warren County Emergency Ambulance Service for treatment of non-critical injuries.The accident happened at 8 p.m. at near the intersection of U.S. 70 Bypass and New Smithville Highway as Leithiser was crossing the bypass on foot.Police say Leithiser was walking north when the 2006 Volkswagen Bug driven by Kaitlin Lawrence, 16, appeared behind him from the south traveling on Smithville Highway. Not seeing the pedestrian in her path as she made her left turn onto the bypass, the teen struck the victim, the impact throwing him to the pavement.During subsequent conversations with the victim, police discovered that not only had the teen driver not seen the pedestrian, but that Leithiser had not seen the car coming since it was turning from his rear.No charges have been filed.
