A woman has entered a no-contest plea to charges she ripped off her boss and embezzled thousands of dollars in her role as office manager.
The woman, Jane Ann Cox Travis, entered a no-contest plea to the charge of theft under $1,000 and was placed on probation for two years. She was given the sentence under a judicial diversion meaning she can have her criminal record erased after she completes her probationary period.
She will be required to make $1,293 restitution and make a $250 contribution to the economic crimes fund. She had formerly been charged with theft over $10,000.
According to McMinnville police detective Todd Rowland, the matter was brought to his attention after an accounting of the financial books of Dr. Dawn Marie Riley revealed irregularities.
“She (Travis) had full access to the company credit card and she was buying whatever she wanted with it,” Rowland said of the auditor findings. “She had a bunch of stuff ordered from Amazon and places like that.”
Rowland said the embezzlement continued for around a year from what he can determine. It ended with the auditor’s finding and her termination from employment. Many of the items ordered on Amazon by Travis were credited back to the doctor’s account, explaining why her restitution was far less than the more than $10,000 police believe she tried to take.
In addition to charging up the company credit card, Rowland said Travis is accused of taking one more liberty as office manager.
“She gave herself a raise,” Rowland said. “The doctor said she didn’t remember ever OK'ing her a raise so we believe she did that herself as office manager.”
