Warren County Animal Control has a new puppy for 2015. Her name is Millie and she was born at the facility.
“We had Millie’s mom, April, come in,” said Animal Control director Kim Pettrey. “She didn’t look pregnant at all. She was eating well and started to put on some weight. I thought she started to look a little pregnant. I called the vet to set her an appointment. We didn’t know it, but she was a lot pregnant. A couple days later, even before we could get her into the vet, Millie was born.”
April is a Mountain Cur mix. She is black in color with a white patch on her chest. Millie resembled her mother, but with one noticeable difference – she has what appears to be wrinkles.
“Millie is wrinkled like a Shar-pei,” said Pettrey, which is a dog known for its distinctive features of deep wrinkles. “I don’t think she has any Shar pei in her. What she does have a lot of is cuteness. She is adorable.”
Millie is an only puppy, meaning she was born without litter mates. Pettrey says it is rare for larger dogs to have just one puppy.
“When Millie was born, I kept waiting on April to have more puppies. She didn’t. It’s rare for larger dogs to only have one. Smaller does might only have only one puppy, but I was expecting April to have a litter of six or seven. She had one puppy. One gorgeous puppy.”
It will be a few more weeks before April or Millie can be adopted out of the facility, as the two need to spend more time together.
“April is a really good mother,” said Pettrey. “She’s very loving and caring. I’m sure this is her first puppy, because she’s probably less than a year old. It will be a few more weeks before either can be adopted out. Until then, we’ll enjoy having Millie around. She’s our unexpected bundle of joy.”
Adoptions are $85 for a dog and $65 for a cat. Animals coming into the facility that have already been spayed or neutered are $10. Animal Control is located at 169 Paws Trail. Serious inquires only may call 507-3647.
