A woman who beat her handicapped 6-year-old son in a fit of rage has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.The mother, Lara Almeda Stevens, 28, entered guilty pleas before Circuit Court Judge Bart Stanley to charges of misdemeanor child abuse and violating her probation on her prior conviction on the charge of domestic assault. She was ordered to serve 90 days of an 11-month, 29-day sentence with the balance to be spent on probation.Her charges were brought for the beating of her boys, ages 6 and 11.“She was in a rage, upset about a boyfriend that was in trouble and took her rage out on her sons,” said sheriff’s investigator Travis Thaxton in his warrants again Stevens.The incident, which was witnessed by a family member, began when Stevens entered the room of the youngest boy and started striking him.“He is disabled and uses a walker to walk,” Thaxton said of the boy. “She used a belt and started whipping the child while he was in bed.”In addition to assaulting her handicapped child, Stevens reportedly struck his older 11-year-old brother, the attack starting while he was asleep.“She hit him with an extension cord while he was in bed asleep, leaving marks on his body,” Thaxton said.
