An appeal to a higher court by a woman convicted of assaulting her boyfriend paid off as her sentence was slashed to a fraction of the one year she was to serve for domestic assault. The woman, Laura A. Martinez, 23, had been given an 11-month, 29-day sentence to be served entirely in jail by General Sessions Judge Larry Ross after she showed up for court alongside the man she had assaulted. Her sentence was the maximum available for the crime. However, the appeal, heard by Circuit Court Judge Bart Stanley was partially upheld as he reduced her time to 45 days of an 11-29 sentence. Her sentence came for her assaulting of her boyfriend, Joshus Vasquez. Police took the assault warrant against Martinez when they arrived to find her lying on the ground intoxicated outside the N. Spring Street residence where the assault happened.
