A water department employee lost his life Tuesday when the ditch where he was working collapsed around him.

The accident took place on Phifer Mine Road in the Piney community of Van Buren County. Crews with Spencer Utility District were in the area to repair a broken water main.

The fatally injured worker was reportedly over his head in a ditch with water present in the area when the ground caved in around him. Co-workers were unable to reach him, according to reports. He has been identified as Mickey Fisher, a city of Spencer employee who worked for the water department.

Recovery efforts involved multiple agencies, including a search and rescue team from Chattanooga. Multiple local agencies were on the scene, including volunteer firefighters, road crew members and responders from the sheriff’s department and police department.
