Emergency responders gather at Cumberland Plaza on Tuesday after a 65-year-old female pedestrian was hit by a Nissan pickup that was backing up in the parking lot.

A 65-year-old woman was hospitalized Tuesday when a pickup backed into her as she was walking in front of Goodwill.

Reba C. Brown of McMinnville was transported to Saint Thomas River Park Hospital for what is believed to be head and hip injuries.

The accident took place around 1:45 p.m. in front of Goodwill at Cumberland Plaza Shopping Center. A pickup driven by Timothy Earl King of Palmer was in reverse when it struck Brown.

“It was kind of a freak accident,” said McMinnville Police Lt. Lisa Norris. “He was driving to Lowe’s when his wife decided she wanted to go to Goodwill. So he stopped and started backing up and about that same time she stepped out into the parking lot. Neither one saw the other.”

Lt. Norris said there was screaming just before impact as witnesses saw what was about to happen and tried to alert the driver or pedestrian. But the collision was not avoided.

Lt. Norris said no charges are expected.
