Davin Smith, a first-grader at West Elementary, got the surprise of his life recently when his mother picked him up early from school. His mother, Katheryn Oler, is an active-duty Navy veteran currently stationed in California. 

The last time the two have seen each other was in January before the pandemic. When Oler had the chance to come visit, she couldn’t pass it up. Smith was picked up early and was super excited for the fun that was planned. He was happy to leave school early, but even happier when it was with his mother.
