West Elementary School’s PTO is seeking to provide students with shade, shelter and hydration in the form of an outdoor open-air classroom.
“There are lots of things that we’d like to assist the school in obtaining, but we’ve got our sights set on a specific need,” said Amber Bain, PTO secretary. “We held a leadership meeting and teachers thought a pavilion and water fountain would be the best thing for the school at this time. So, that’s the motivating factor behind our new fundraiser.”
PTO members are seeking permission from the McMinnville Board of Mayor and Aldermen to hold a 5K race called Wizard Run on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
“We hope to raise enough money to construct a pavilion large enough for students from two classrooms,” said Bain. “If not with this one race, eventually. This will be the first Wizard Run and we hope to continue offering it annually. If we can get students, parents and the community involved, we can continually grow this event and use those funds to benefit students.”
PTO members are currently working with McMinnville Police Department and McMinnville Public Works Department regarding the race course, required street closures and other details. Final approval for the 5K race will come from the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, which meets Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
