If your middle schooler plays baseball, you may be excited to learn WCMS is getting a new baseball press box.
During the last School Board meeting, WCMS head baseball coach Chad Young and assistant coach Chase McGee received approval to build an elevated press box measuring 20 feet long, 10 feet wide and elevated eight feet off the ground.
According to McGee, the press box will be located behind the backstop and will be funded by local donations.
“We don’t plan to obstruct the emergency route that goes around the back of the middle school,” said McGee to the School Board. “Where the current concession stand is, we are wanting to remove it and construct an elevated press box because we experienced a lot of flood damage last year.”
McGee said they are trying to get the sound equipment above ground to avoid this issue. Last year, he said thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment was lost to the February flooding.
Continued McGee, “I have a contractor who is going to construct the building free of charge. The materials have been donated to the cause so there will not be any expense to this.”
“I think it will be a good addition and how do you argue with free,” said Director of Schools Bobby Cox.
McGee explained to the School Board there should be very little upkeep to the press box, which will be wrapped in metal with windows in front and the sound system mounted. It will also double as storage. He hopes to have it constructed before the start of the season in March.
“It’s something that has been needed,” said McGee. “We’re hoping in the future to put in bathrooms and maybe having an opening for concessions. The press box should only take about a week to put up.”
