Warren County Lady Pioneer varsity volleyball player Marah Wanamaker, left, looks on as Hope Mullican places a kill shot Thursday night.

The WCHS varsity volleyball team (6-4, 14-6) faced a tough opponent in their final district match, losing to Cookeville’s Lady Cavaliers, 19-25, 15-15, 17-25 at home.
Although falling to the Lady Cavaliers, the Lady Pioneer varsity volleyball team ended up with district and overall winning records.
“We doubled our wins this year,” said Warren County volleyball head coach Katie Rogers. The Lady Pioneers went from three district wins last year to six this year. “The record book may not label this one as a W, but we definitely had small victories of our own throughout the match.”
The Lady Cavs were a tough team, playing both physical and smart, according to Rogers. They played clean making few errors and their setup was flawless. Even so, the Lady Pioneers made them work for their win as repelling the Lady Cav kills was top notch.
“Cookeville is the toughest team in our district. They have been for the past several years. I was really proud of how the girls came into this match with the right mentality. It could have been very easy for them to lie down, but they made Cookeville earn and fight this win,” Rogers said.
Warren County had some kills of its own as Bethany Fye said in your face 10 times and Emily Mikkola had two kills. Fye also aced 3, Mikkola 2.
After the heated defensive play by the Pioneers, the Lady Cavs started having serving miscues giving up more points and almost allowing Warren County a rebound opportunity.
“We won on blocks and made them get frustrated to where they started having hitting errors,” Rogers added. “We also beat them with our energy level. Our girls stayed enthused and intense through the entire match and I don’t think Cookeville was ready for that.”
The Lady Pioneer varsity volleyball team has one last game in Tullahoma tomorrow beginning at 5 p.m. before starting tournament play.
