A drunk driver who crashed his car and then fell asleep in the patrol car as he was being taken to jail has been sentenced to 75 days in jail. The man, Jeffery Allen Ward, 33, entered guilty pleas before General Sessions Judge Bill Locke to charges of second-offense DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting stop, and simple possession of drugs. His jail time comes after he crashed his car into a ditch near the intersection of Knight and Brown Prater roads.“I noticed a vehicle in the ditch with the engine running,” recalled Sheriff’s Sgt. Billy Joe Crouch, noting bystanders informed him the driver had run from the scene.Crouch said the suspect was sighted a short time later. “He was hiding in a ditch.”The sergeant said Ward began resisting when he tried to take him into custody and it took two officers to finally subdue him and wrestle him into the back of the patrol car. Once at the jail, corrections officers found Xanax and hydrocodone pills on his person.
