Walk-up window being installed at City Hall

McMinnville City Hall is getting a walk-up window.

It’s one of the many changes taking place after Regions Bank vacated the first floor of City Hall and city government prepares to occupy the entire building.

“We’d really like a drive-up window, but that’s not feasible with the way things are situated downtown,” said city administrator Nolan Ming. “So we figured a walk-up window would be the next best thing. People can take care of business and not have to enter the building. It’s good with COVID concerns, but it’s something we’ll continue long after that.”

The walk-up window will be located where the bank ATM used to be.

The biggest upcoming change is McMinnville Police Department will be relocating to City Hall and leaving its home of 11 years on Red Road. Police headquarters will be on the third floor with an office also on the first floor for convenience.

There will be a few assigned parking spaces for police officers on the side of City Hall before the post office. Ming said there will be an emphasis on keeping police vehicles from saturating Main Street.

“A few business owners I’ve talked to have said they don’t want there to be police cars up and down Main Street,” said Ming, indicating that could create an appearance that something bad has happened downtown.

The spacious first floor will provide offices for several city employees. Ming also wants it to be a place for artwork.

“We have a lot of wall space here so I’d like for us to display some historic images that highlight McMinnville’s history,” said Ming.

The first floor is in good shape, Ming says, and he estimates it will take a month or two before renovation work is complete and moving can begin.
