The University of Tennessee’s search for a football coach went from the sports page to grab national headlines Sunday when the Vols rescinded a job offer because of social media backlash.Several state officials reacted negatively to the potential hire of Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and even the White House press secretary entered the running dialog with a Facebook post. The result has the Vols still searching for a football coach as of press time Tuesday night and some fans wondering what happened.“If it hadn’t been for all the alumni getting in the way, they would have hired a good coach,” said local resident John Womack. “They need to let the athletic director do his job. Until the fans stop fighting each other, they won’t have anything.”Womack said he liked the proposed Schiano hire because he has a reputation as a firm coach.“They need discipline more than anything else,” said Womack.Local resident Brad Durham watched the social media frenzy unfold Sunday afternoon.
