A Nashville man was seriously injured in the pre-dawn hours Thursday morning when he fell asleep at the wheel and struck Angel’s Bridge.
The driver, Gregory Burber of Nashville, was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, suffering two broken legs from the crash.
According to McMinnville Police Department reports, Burber was driving his delivery truck and was about to merge onto Highway 70 Bypass when the accident occurred around 5 a.m. Burber told investigators he believes he fell asleep as he was traveling down the on-ramp. His vehicle then ran off the road and traveled up an embankment, striking a pillar of the bridge located near Newtown.
The impact left him trapped in the wreckage. He was extricated by the ambulance service and later airlifted for treatment. Police do not suspect any drugs or alcohol were involved but instead it was caused by his falling asleep at the wheel.
