Triathlon approved by city
McMinnville City Triathlon has been given approval for Sept. 5. Pictured is the swimming portion of a previous event.

A local multisport race is scheduled to swim, cycle and run its way back through the streets of McMinnville in 2020.

McMinnville’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen has unanimously approved the McMinnville City Triathlon for Sept. 5.

“It will be very much the same as the previous years,” said Triathlon Committee member Bobby Kirby in a letter request. “We ask for full support from the city’s Park and Recreation, Police and Safety, as well as Public Works Department.”

City officials have been offering their triathlon support since 2014 by waiving the rental fee for use of Gilley Pool for the swimming portion and providing traffic control by McMinnville Police Department for the final two legs of the race.

Renovation at the Civic Center will not negatively impact this event.

“We fully understand the Civic Center renovation and would like to do the same as we did last year,” said Kirby. “We would like to request the blocking and closing of Garfield Street between Sunset Drive to Clark Boulevard, and the closing of the inside lane of Clark Boulevard between DC Tire at Post Road and Club Drive.”

This is the ninth year for Triathlon Committee members to spearhead the event.
