Firefighters prepare for river rescue

Training exercises are being undertaken at Riverfront Park this week by members of McMinnville Fire Department. Water rescue techniques were practiced using a kayak, longboard and rope. Pictured is Capt. Josh Baker tossing a rope to firefighter Grant Seaborne.
McMinnville Fire Department used Riverfront Park as a training destination Wednesday.“The guys are practicing water rescue efforts,” said McMinnville Fire Chief Kendall Mayfield. “They’re using the kayak, longboard and rope.”While one firefighter pretended to be stranded in the water, others would use the rescue-related equipment to retrieve him from the river. The city purchased the items in 2015 due to the number of recreation enthusiast canoeing, tubing and kayaking the Barren Fork River and the possible need for items that could be used during river rescues. The kayak and longboard cost $1,500.The exercise, said Mayfield, is an example of the department’s continued effort to be ready for any emergency.
