Alderman Zach Sutton will be saying farewell to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

“Although it is an honor to serve the citizens of McMinnville, I will not be running for the position of alderman in the 2022 election,” said Sutton.

Sutton was appointed in December 2020. He was selected by the board to fill a vacancy created when Alderman Ryle Chastain was elected McMinnville Mayor in November 2020. Sutton was the appointee selected to complete the remaining two years of Chastain’s alderman term until November 2022.

In making the announcement, Sutton included an appeal, “I encourage citizens east of downtown, south of the Barren Fork, and north of the bypass to run for alderman as these areas have no residential representation on the current board.”

Unlike Warren County government, which is divided into 12 districts and two commissioners are elected to represent each on the Warren County Commission, the city of McMinnville is not. Board of Mayor and Aldermen members can reside anywhere within the city limits. Westwood, and that area of town, is historically well represented on the board.

The alderman seats currently being held by Aldermen Everett Brock and Steve Harvey will also be up for grabs in November 2022.

“I plan to run again,” said Harvey. “We’ve gotten a lot done, but we’ve got more to do. There’s a lot of things that we are working on now that I would like to see happen in the future. I think we are heading in the right direction and we have a good board. We work well together. I’d like to keep it going.”

Brock expressed a desire to wait another couple of months before making a decision.

For those considering a run for McMinnville alderman, there is plenty of time to decide. According to Warren County Election Commission, qualifying papers won’t be available until June 20 and the deadline to submit is Aug. 20 at noon.

McMinnville aldermen receive $400 a month.
