McMinnville Police Department has detected a traffic problem on Sunset Drive.

A traffic review was conducted in the first 2-3 weeks of July on the straight section of Sunset Drive behind McMinnville Civic Center. It revealed some drivers have a need for speed.

“Our investigation has determined there is a speed issue on Sunset Drive, which we are addressing,” said McMinnville Police Lt. Mark Mara. “Most motorists were in the 40-45 mph range. However, the highest speed was 64 mph.”

The speed limit is 30 mph.

The department utilizes a speed box and a speed trailer – both with built-in radar units and time stamps – to gather its information. While the speed box is a pole-mounted box and discreetly placed, the trailer offers a visual indication of the actual speed limit and a motorist’s real-time speed in an effort to educate.

Officers are stepping up enforcement in the area with the hopes of discouraging any motorist from putting the pedal to the metal.

The department conducts traffic reviews as needed to gather information and determine if, and when during the day, there is a problem with speeders.
