Have Warren County residents had a change of heart when it comes to COVID vaccinations?
That’s what Theresa Hill of Family Care Clinic wants to learn. Family Care Clinic has obtained a grant to study vaccine hesitancy to see if local views have changed in half a year.
An initial study was conducted the week of the Warren County A&L Fair in September with 150 surveys received. Now six months later, Family Care Clinic is offering the survey again, this time online with easy access through a QR code that can be found on page 2C.
“What I learned from the first survey is people have strong opinions on the vaccine one way or the other,” said Hill. “What I’d like to know is have things changed at all? I can say there was definitely some vaccine hesitancy with the first survey. And there was conspiracy thinking.”
According to the Tennessee Department of Health, 44.3% of the Warren County population has been fully vaccinated. The state says 49.6% of Warren County residents have received one dose.
Family Care Clinic conducted the week-long fair survey with the help of Graves Family Pharmacy. The goal was to learn more about why people are not embracing the vaccine.
“A big part of it is generational with younger people not seeing a need for vaccines,” said Hill. “But that’s also a generation that didn’t have to endure polio or measles, two diseases that are now preventable that people were dying from years ago.”
Hill said the No. 1 reason people listed for not getting vaccinated was fear of side effects.
She said the No. 2 most popular reason is that not enough research has been conducted on the vaccine. Along those same lines, Hill said many people said it’s their opinion the vaccine was developed too quickly for their comfort level.
Other reasons given for not getting vaccinated:
• The person didn’t like the idea of a vaccine mandate and being told what to do
• Religious reasons
• The person already had COVID and felt the vaccine unnecessary
• Terrified of vaccines
• Underlying health conditions
There were unique reasons given in addition to the more common ones.
Other survey respondents noted their reasons for not getting vaccinated:
• There’s a microchip in it
• God said not to
• It’s the mark of the beast
For those who would like to participate in the follow-up survey, which is anonymous, there is a full-page ad on page 2C that has the QR code to scan to take you straight to the survey.
For those who don’t have the capability to scan the QR code but would like to take the survey, it can be accessed online at surveymonkey.com/r/VMBW7DK
