Valentine’s Day may be known as a day of romance.

Here at the Southern Standard office, it’s a day to give away free merchandise.

Prizes were awarded just in time for Valentine’s Day to two lucky winners.

At Warehouse Discount Groceries, Centertown resident Libby Watts is the winner of the grocery giveaway worth $200. She knows exactly what she’s doing with the money.

“I’m going to stock up on meat,” said Watts. “We have a deep freezer and I’m going to pack it full. My husband loves meat and I have three kids who all love meat so I’m going to use the $200 to buy as much meat as I can.”

Warehouse Discount Groceries is a great place to do that shopping as the supermarket prides itself on high-quality meats. Store director Jackson Lambert says they have regular customers who travel from outside Warren County just to take advantage of the meat selection at WDG.

Watts says meatloaf and bacon cheeseburgers are favorite meals at her house. Her family also scarfs down beef chimichangas.

As for her Valentine’s Day plans, Watts says they are going to keep it simple.

“My parents are keeping the kids and my husband and I are planning on staying home and making steaks for dinner,” she said. “I like to do baking too so I might make a raspberry tart.”

She wasn’t the only big winner. Jody Arnold and Tina Henderson won the Standard’s Best Friends Photo Contest for a picture they submitted with Poison singer Bret Michaels. The winner was determined by online voting.

In winning the photo contest, Arnold and Henderson are showered with gifts, including a gift certificate to J’s Restaurant for dinner for two, fine jewelry from JC Penneys, a gift certificate from Somewhere Liquors, and a gift certificate from Silver Scissors.

J’s Restaurant owner Junior Petit is proud to promote his dinner for two special throughout the month of February. It includes an appetizer, and ribs or steak for two for the low price of $23.99.

At JC Penney, there’s still plenty of time to get that special someone in your life beautiful jewelry. The store has a sale with a .10 carat diamond mounted in earrings, necklaces and rings for $25, or $20 if you buy two.

The JC Penney sale lasts through Feb. 19 so there’s still plenty of time to act to show your love on Valentine’s Day and beyond.
