Soule tries hand at songwriting contest
Soule Enters TN Songwriter Qualifier.jpg

McMinnville resident and musician Jeff Soule is taking his shot at the Tennessee Songwriters Week Qualifying Round.

Soule says he first heard about the competition from a friend online and quickly contacted Collins River BBQ owner Joe O’Neal. Collins River BBQ was selected as one of the venues to host a qualifying round for the competition.

Winners of the qualifying rounds will advance to showcase events at venues in Memphis, Franklin, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Gatlinburg and Johnson City. The showcase winners will get their chance to perform at the Bluebird Café in Nashville.

“It seems like a really neat event and usually you meet some cool people doing things like this,” said Soule.

Songwriters who enter will perform one original song that they own the rights to perform and either wrote or co-wrote. Soule is still unsure which of his songs he will be performing.

“I’m still not certain which song I’m going to do, but what I enjoy about writing songs is how they have the ability to connect with people and touch their lives in a special way that only music can do,” said Soule.

Qualifying rounds are offered Jan. 30 through Feb. 12 and there were 35 venues chosen across the state with 16 in Middle Tennessee. This is the first time a venue in Warren County has been chosen. Top songwriters from the qualifying rounds will perform during one of the six Tennessee Songwriters Week showcases. Showcase events will be held Feb. 20-26.

Finalists from the showcases will get the opportunity to share their original songs on the historic Bluebird Café stage where many famous artists got their starts. The prize winners will also receive a two night stay in a hotel near the Bluebird Café, two single show tickets to a show at the Bluebird Café, a membership to the Nashville Songwriters Association International that will also include mentoring sessions and a $100 gift card, and a branded commemorative guitar.

Soule, as well as eight other solo singers, one duo, and one trio, will be taking the stage at Collins River BBQ on Thursday, Feb. 3 starting at 4 p.m.
