Schools out for illness

Coughing students mean the Warren County School System is going to have to cough up two more bad-weather days due to illness.

The school system has announced there will be no school on Friday or Monday, giving students and teachers a four-day weekend at the recommendation of medical professionals.

Days missed due to illness are taken from the stockpiled days the school system has for bad weather. After the two days used Friday and Monday, the school system will have four days left.

According to director of attendance Jeffery Martin, 524 students missed school systemwide on Thursday. That’s an absentee rate of 8.38 percent. At WCHS, there were 179 students out of school.

On Wednesday, 560 students missed school, or 8.96 percent system-wide. The highest absentee total this month was Feb. 1 when 581 students missed school.

Enrollment is 6,250 students system-wide, according to Martin.

Closing schools won’t impact WCHS athletics. The Pioneer and Lady Pioneer basketball games Friday night against White County will be played as scheduled. It will serve as Senior Night for 11 members of the two teams who will be playing their last game at Charlie Dalton Gym.
