Warren County Schools are down to one snow day after a pair of weather systems kept students home this year.
“Hopefully that will be all for bad weather this year,” said Director of Schools Bobby Cox as he and the Board of Education hashed out their contingency plan in case weather again closes schools. “If something does happen, then we will have to take further action.”
The first action, Cox said, should schools be closed for more than one day for weather or other circumstances, would to be to convert a professional development day that is still unused. The school system, he explained, begins the year with 13 snow/professional development days, nine of which are normally dedicated to bad weather.
“I guess the first things we look at will be Presidents Day and Good Friday,” Cox suggested, noting if the weather issue were to happen after mid-February when students get Presidents Day off, consideration would turn to Good Friday.
“We want to stay away from Spring Break,” Cox said. “Lots of families have plans and trips so touching Spring Break would not be a popular thing to do.”
Should the professional development day, Presidents Day and Good Friday all be consumed and more days missed, Cox suggested adding days to the end of the school year would likely be the best option. School Board chair James Bennett concurred. A former high school principal, Bennett pointed out using Saturdays as make-up days was very unpopular when it was done many years ago.
