School signs go solar

Pictured is a solar-powered school zone sign installed near West Elementary earlier this month.

To let motorists know when they are entering a school zone and need to adjust their speed, new signs have been placed around WCHS and West Elementary.

The new school zone signs use solar energy to power the flashing lights that are activated in mornings and afternoons with school traffic.

Director of Schools Grant Swallows said the signs cost a little more up front, but the school system will gain energy savings every month by harnessing the power of the sun.

Swallows said Bobby Ray would likely be the next school to get new signals, but said it would be down the road.
