Relay for Life is getting stopped in its tracks.
The American Cancer Society has canceled all Relay for Life events this year, according to local organizer Carla Savage.
“It’s a relief I didn’t have to make this decision, but it’s a blow because we don’t get to have an event this year,” said Savage. “It’s so important to me because we get to honor and remember those who we’ve lost and we also get to recognize survivors.”
Warren County’s Relay for Life was set for June 6 in downtown McMinnville. The annual survivor’s dinner was scheduled for May 28. Both are canceled.
“This will be a big financial blow,” said Savage. “We’ve made a little bit so far, but it’s a drop in the bucket to what we normally raise.”
Savage says donations would have likely been down this year even if an event would have been held.
“We rely so much on small businesses, and the small businesses in this community have been so good to us over the years, but many of them have been shut down so they’re probably not in the same position they usually are,” said Savage. “We’ll have to see how Warren County bounces back.”
Relay for Life got its start 28 years ago as an all-night walk to raise money for the fight against cancer. It got its start in Warren County about 20 years ago at Nunley Stadium. This would have been its third year downtown.
