A patient who reportedly used a cross to attack medical personnel while he was hospitalized has been bound over to the grand jury on the charge of aggravated assault.

Jeremy W. Duke, 38, faces the felony for an incident which occurred at Ascension Saint Thomas River Park.

According to the warrant for Duke’s arrest, while receiving medical care he reportedly removed a metal crucifix from the wall of his room and “held it in an aggressive manner with the sharp end pointed out.”

The warrant further states, “Mr. Duke threatened to kill hospital staff and stated he was leaving one way or another.”

Hospital staff members who witnessed the tirade included Heather George, Donna Leggett and Ryle Chastain, who also serves as McMinnville’s mayor.

Officer Matthew Stubblefield of McMinnville Police Department arrived on scene and made contact with the suspect in the ICU.

“Mr. Duke attempted to hide the weapon in his gown,” the warrant says.

Duke was placed under arrest, handcuffed, and transported to Warren County Jail.

Mr. Duke’s case is scheduled to be heard by the grand jury in June. If an indictment is returned, criminal charges against him will continue.
