In October 1999, Exchange Clubs across the U.S. and Puerto Rico made history by participating in the first National Day of Service. On that day, more than 2,500 Exchange members took part in service projects benefitting their individual communities. Now, 23 years later, National Day of Service continues to be held annually in October and is still helping Exchange members find new ways to serve their communities.
For their 2022 National Day of Service project, members of the Noon Exchange Club of McMinnville chose to do a supply drive and donation to the Homeless of McMinnville Effort (HOME), and the organization’s newest project, The Haven, a home designed specifically for local unhoused women and children. Work on the house has been a recent project of HOME and the organization welcomed its first residents just last week.
“Our local homeless individuals and families have so many needs. With Haven House and Prosperity Point in place, HOME and its volunteers will continue to make every effort to be a “hand up” and not just a “hand out” as we build sustainability within one of our most vulnerable populations,” said HOME volunteer Jimmy Haley.
National Day of Service is a call to action to stand up and participate in community service projects. Even the smallest clubs can help their local communities and can contribute to Exchange’s impact across America. Throughout the year, Noon Exchange Club and its members gather supplies to donate to a variety of non-profits across the community. HOME has been a favorite group to support for Noon Exchange over the last few years as members have realized the impact the organization makes in the community.
“We have done several supply drives within our club to collect needed items for HOME. We were happy to have the opportunity to do another drive and donation for HOME that coincided with National Day of Service and allows us to amplify the mission of the National Exchange Club, as well as our club members’ individual values,” said Noon Exchange secretary, Dr. Karla Addesso.
HOME accepts donations each Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church Outreach Building in downtown McMinnville.
“With the rising number of challenges across all communities, it is a blessing to have local volunteers and support agencies who truly make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate,” Haley continued. “HOME has helped to change lives and we are grateful to organizations like Noon Exchange Club for frequent donations as well as First United Methodist Church for powering the outreach program that operates on its campus.”
The Noon Exchange Club of McMinnville typically meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at different locations in McMinnville. For more information about the club and meeting details, text or call 931-607-6599.
