Neon sign to return to Main Street

The owners of Diamond Jewelry Co. plan to restore this neon sign, which currently hangs on the back wall of the building. Once refurbished, the city’s Historic Zoning Commission has approved its return to the storefront.

A historic neon sign is on its way back to Main Street.

Melanie and David Stinson received permission to place an original neon sign back onto their building at 117 W. Main Street, the location of Diamond Jewelry Co., once it is refurbished.

Melanie says the sign was removed from the front of the building years ago due to its dilapidated condition, but they now have a desire to preserve the past.

“Our youngest son is interested in taking over the business,” said Melanie. “I thought it’s wonderful to hand him a business that his great-grandfather started. We told him the story of Moody and how the sign came to be placed on the building, so we wanted to preserve it. We’re preserving the past for the future generation.”

Members of the city’s Historic Zoning Commission considered the request Tuesday.

“They want the building to look like it was and that’s what we all want,” said commission member Rachel Killebrew. “Thank you, so much. I’m tickled to death that you saved it.”

David replied, “My father never saved much, but he had it placed on the back of the building. That was when the alley was still through there. He said it was broken and never worked, so he stuck it on the back of the building.”

Bobby Kirby also expressed his gratitude with a motion to approve.

“I really like this. I think this is great to restore it back to how it was originally. I like it so much that I make a motion to approve.”

Also considered was an aluminum sign on the west façade of 303 W. Main Street. The request, made by Leta Miller, was unanimously approved.

A sign permit was issued. Once restored, the sign will be placed on the front of the jewelry store.
